Biomimicry is the act of taking inspiration from nature & creating something useful from the design that nature has already provided. In the biomimicry project we were given the task of doing just this, finding issues in the food industry & taking inspiration from nature to solve these problems. To do this we went through a scoping process where we looked at different parts of nature, whether it be the function of something or the system in nature. After this, we had to look at different materials that could be used to mimic this, create the actual design, & come up with a business plan explaining the benefits of the product, economically & environmentally. It was very interesting to see where & how everyone found inspiration from nature & quite amazing to see what they came up with.
Project Reflection
I think the most significant learning experience I could have had throughout the duration of this project is probably all going through the scoping process & finding research on so many different things that could be fixed in our food system. Whether it was production, waste, or distribution, it was all shocking to see how flawed the system is & how we just kind of accept that as a society.
I believe the piece of work that best represents my contribution would be in ideas rather then a physical piece to show. Through brainstorming & casual conversation & debate on the flaws in the industry we were able to create a product that could potentially help the environment as well as all the food wastage problem we have here in America. I believe that that is honestly the best thing all of us had to contribute to the product because after that, it was only a matter of putting it in professional words & making it presentable.
The most challenging part of this project was definitely deciding on only on problem to fix. The food industry is so flawed it was hard to decided even on what part of the system to work on, let alone come up with one specific product to fix one small thing. While each of these small things add up, it was hard not to feel as though it was insignificant compared to the colossal size of the problem.
I think what has & probably always will stick with me is the consciousness of the flaws in not only the food industry but all systems that affect the environment & the economy, whether it be for the better or worse. I'm less inclined to buy certain products or brands that I know will harm me eventually or the environment the way it does. It is, of course, unavoidable most times but still, it's good to be wary of.
